Leonardo, brasilianischer katholischer Theologe und Franziskaner (seit 1958), * Concórdia (Brasilien) 14. 12. 1938; 1970-91 Professor für systematische Theologie in Petrópolis. Boff gilt als einer der profiliertesten Vertreter der Befreiungstheologie. 1984 wurde er wegen der in seinem kirchenkritischen Buch »Igreja: carisma e poder« (1981; deutsch »Kirche: Charisma und Macht«) vertretenen Auffassungen zur Anhörung vor die Glaubenskongregation nach Rom geladen und im Anschluss mit einem einjährigen Publikationsverbot belegt (im April 1986 aufgehoben). 1991 wurde ihm als erneute kirchliche Disziplinarmaßnahme die Chefredaktion der wichtigsten katholischen Zeitschrift Brasiliens, »Revista Voces«, entzogen und gegen ihn ein Lehrverbot für das Priesterseminar in Petrópolis verhängt. Daraufhin legte Boff auch sein Lehramt an der Philosophisch-Theologischen Hochschule nieder, ließ sich 1992 in den Laienstand versetzen und trat den aus dem Franziskanerorden aus. Seither lehrt er, der sich nach wie vor als »Alliierter der Armen« und »Anwalt Lateinamerikas« versteht, an der staatlichen Universität Rio de Janeiro an dem eigens für ihn eingerichteten Lehrstuhl für »Ethik und Spiritualität«. - Boff schrieb »Jesus Cristo Libertador« (1985), »Paixão de Cristo - paixão do mundo« (1977) und »A ressurreição de Cristo - a nossa ressurreição na morte« (1972; alle deutsch in »Jesus Christus, der Befreier«).
